11 Reasons the grass is not always greener…

Have you ever heard the saying – “The grass is not always greener”?   Basically I think this means – look at what you have before you jump into something new.

Are you looking for a new job or career path?   Before you start searching, you should first ask yourself:  What do you currently have?  What are some tangible and intangible reasons on what is positive about your current job?    What are some items that might not be available at your new job?  If you want to leave for more money, my advice is:  Salary should not be the only item.

 

11 Positive Items about your current job to consider (no specific order):

  1. Do you have cheaper insurance premiums?
  2. Current location is closer to home?
  3. Flexibility in hours?
  4. A good 401k match and retirement plan?
  5. Good working relationship with your co-workers and/or boss?
  6. Promotion and career opportunities?
  7. Do you love what you’re doing?
  8. Company outings and trips?
  9. Bonuses/profit-sharing?
  10. Do you have tenure?
  11. Does your job offer you the ability to sustain a good quality of life?

If you are truly unhappy and want to find another job – Good luck and I wish you the best in your career.   If I can help you, as a recruiter, find your Dream Job then I want to do that.  I enjoy helping candidates find their next job and career. 

Please consider the grass and where you are standing before you start your search.   Do not waste the company’s time, your time or mine – if you have not thought it through.    Also if you do get another offer – now you get to think about the “Counter-Offer.”  

 

 

Job Seekers and Recruiters: Are you on about.me?

A friend showed me About.me this week.   What a great site and a way for everyone to have their own splash page.   This is a great new site that allows the person to display their background, specialities and contact information. (My page is here)

 

Job Seekers – Recruiting is evolving and we search the internet for candidates before we even put ads on the job boards.   Why not have your background, specialities and contact information all in one place, easier for us to contact you?   In a paragraph or 2 explain your background and tell your story.   Everyone has a story and you need to tell yours.   As a Job Seeker you should make it as easy as possible for recruiters and hiring managers to find you and contact you.  

 

Recruiters – We are a dime a dozen, there are recruiters everywhere.   I try to differentiate myself to my client companies and the people who I represent.   This helps me do just that.   This gives them a background of me and how to contact me.   I plan on using this as a personal brand tool.   Not all recruiters are the same and work the same.   I want everyone to know what to expect from me and what I expect from them, if I am their recruiter.

The Importance of: Networking Events

 Networking Events are completely underutilized! I cannot tell you how many times I have tried to tell people Networking and Networking events are NOT ONLY for the unemployed. There are few people in this world that didn’t get to something they wanted without the help or knowledge of another person.

When you attend a Networking Event you never know who you will meet. And you never know how you might be able to help them or they might be able to help you! And the help I am referring to does not just have to be about a “need” you have today.

Create connection because you have no idea what you might need in the future!

For example at an event you meet “Joe” and through small talk you find out Joe is unemployed and looking for a new opportunity, but you might not have the right opportunity for him right now, but you also find out that he is making money working at his brother’s shop fixing and towing cars. Low and behold a couple of months down the line you need service and remember Joe and give a call, while there you are talking to his brother and find out his wife is a Project Manager looking for a new BA.

Stories like this actually happen every single day. Now you didn’t meet the PM at the event, and you couldn’t necessarily help the brother-in-law but showing up to the event and networking brought you to this business.

I honestly feel that you should make an effort to go to several events a month because you never know who you will meet and how you may be able to help each other out one day in the future!

Now I understand some of us are more shy than others. And that may be the reason you don’t like Networking events. I promise you if you can force yourself to go, there WILL BE someone who approaches you to talk. And with each conversation you will feel more comfortable and before you know it, it will be time to go home with a pocket full of new connections!

Ready to get motivated for the new year? Here’s how!

I want to start this off by saying, I did not write this. At least, not the 14 items listed. I do, however believe in the content whole heartedly. There are countless reasons to stay motivated and everyone has their own reasons to be motivated. The 14 items below can help you stay on track!

1. Condition your mind. Train yourself to think positive thoughts while avoiding negative thoughts.

2. Condition your body. It takes physical energy to take action.  Get your food and exercise budget in place and follow it like a business plan.

3. Avoid negative people. They drain your energy and waste your time, so hanging with them is like shooting yourself in the foot.

4. Seek out the similarly motivated. Their positive energy will rub off on you and you can imitate their success strategies.

5. Have goals–but remain flexible. No plan should be cast in concrete, lest it become more important than achieving the goal.

6. Act with a higher purpose.  Any activity or action that doesn’t serve your higher goal is wasted effort–and should be avoided.

7. Take responsibility for your own results. If you blame (or credit) luck, fate or divine intervention, you’ll always have an excuse.

8. Stretch past your limits on a daily basis. Walking the old, familiar paths is how you grow old. Stretching makes you grow and evolve.

9. Don’t wait for perfection; do it now! Perfectionists are the losers in the game of life.  Strive for excellence rather than the unachievable.

10. Celebrate your failures. Your most important lessons in life will come from what you don’t achieve. Take time to understand where you fell short.

11. Don’t take success too seriously. Success can breed tomorrow’s failure if you use it as an excuse to become complacent.

12. Avoid weak goals.  Goals are the soul of achievement, so never begin them with “I’ll try …” Always start with “I will” or “I must.”

13. Treat inaction as the only real failure.  If you don’t take action, you fail by default and can’t even learn from the experience.

14. Think before you speak.  Keep silent rather than express something that doesn’t serve your purpose.

Top 5 Reasons Job Seekers should use a Recruiter…

I was asked this weekend,  why should they use a recruiter?   This was very easy for me to answer and decided to post the top 5 reasons Job Seekers should use a Professional Recruiter when searching for a new Job.

 

  1. We Interview people Everyday.   We can help you.
  2. We have jobs/opportunities that are not posted anywhere else. (Contract, Contract-to-Hire and Direct Hire)
  3. Contract work can lead to a PERM job/Career.
  4. You should always know at least 3 recruiters in your industry.  You never know when you’ll need one.
  5. We know the story behind the job and may be able to give you the inside scoop.

 

Extra Reason:

  •  I don’t push resumes – I share stories to verify it is the right fit.

 

What Would Grandma Say?

How does an individual looking for a job, or a professional interacting with other professionals determine what is, and is not, appropriate to post on social networks?

I’m on Facebook, I’m on Twitter and I’m on LinkedIn. I have been a social media participant for several years now. For business I use Twitter and LinkedIn. For personal use I’m on Facebook in order to stay in touch with family and friends. The line between business and personal is sometimes grayed as many clients and co-workers have moved from business associates on LinkedIn to personal friends on Facebook.

If you look at what I post I try to keep almost everything informative however I usually incorporate some aspect of my personality. Typically this means blending my sense of humor into what is usually a link to a business article. I operate in a professional world where work does not stay at the office. Cleveland is a small town and I run into clients and candidates every time I go out with friends or my wife. Long story short I have to portray professionalism in real life and via social media in virtually everything I do.

In all honestly, I have sometimes struggled with taking my sense of humor too far, saying something that you might not find funny or posting something that could prove offensive. We’ve all heard the horror stories about individuals who have lost jobs or not been hired because of something they posted in the past. Remember, what you put online never goes away.

That’s why I follow my own rule of “What Would Grandma Say?”. What would my grandmother say if she saw this post. Would she be embarrassed for her grandson, or proud. If my grandmamma would object to how I say something, or something I plan to post to Twitter, I probably shouldn’t post it at all. I’m a big believer in being yourself, and that we should all communicate and share in ways that show off our positive qualities. That said, the things I say and do in front of grandma are typically much more filtered than what I say and do in front of friends. As such, the things I say and do on social media should also be much more filtered than what I say and do in front of friends. What Would Grandma Say about this post?

So what’s the deal with Social Media?

Ryan just checked-in at work. Nope. Not me. Never going to happen. I don’t care about who is going to the library to check out the next Harry Potter book. I don’t care that you are now the “Mayor” of Starbucks. Oh great, you just “tweeted” Awesome! Why do I care? I don’t. Not at all.

Until I couldn’t get enough of it.  Give me Facebook. Give me Linkedin. Tweet tweet tweet! Give me more social media! I want to know everything about everything and I want to know it now! I want to know what Ivanka Trump is wearing to the Academy Awards tomorrow. Tell me about your beautiful little baby boy and how “he’s growing up so fast.” PLEASE, give me details about your double espresso, non-fat, light whipped cream caramel deluxe coffee. I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT…..And so does everyone else.

Why?

Because people are curious by nature. Social media is like reality tv on steroids. We can know what anyone and everyone is doing and we get to know RIGHT AWAY! I don’t have to “tune in next week”, just hit refresh and there’s more to see!

But….

There’s a lot more to it than just entertainment value. In the world of recruiting and job searching, it is invaluable! Learn about the companies you’re interviewing with. The people you’re meeting. Their likes, interests, dislikes, where they went to school… etc. This can make finding a job, and more importantly preparing for the interview much easier. People want to work with people they like. Learning about a person from sites like Linkedin and Facebook can give you just the right amount of personal touch when you are trying to make the right impression. Maybe you went to the same school. Maybe you both watch “Bones” religiously. (Why, I have no idea) Anything you can learn about that person and/or the company to show that you’re prepared and interested. Not just in getting a job, but in the team and company – That’s always going to be a benefit!

So tell me you’ve just checked in at krispy kreme to get your fav double glazed, artery clogging deep fried chocolate cream puff…. I might just show up to your office with one…..

My purpose…

I am a recruiter who loves what I do.     I like to learn new innovative ways to do my job and to better my craft.   I love sharing what I learn with others out there, in the recruiting industry and in the world in general.  

 

I have been recruiting since 1999 – A lot has changed since then.   This is an ever-changing job and profession, which is one of the main reasons why I enjoy it so much.   I was told once that Recruiting is “A FEW SIMPLE DISCIPLINES PRACTICED EVERYDAY” and this is so true.   Even though you must do these disciplines daily, the way you do them has evolved.  I will mostly write about these changes/updates and how I use them to recruit.    Some might say these are the secrets recruiters use to help their clients and candidates get the job they are looking for.
